Construction discipline, applied to your house

A team of construction and project managers and engineers with decades of experience on projects from multi-million-dollar builds to home repairs. Incepted 1999.

Why this exists

Hiring a contractor is one of the few large purchases most people make with almost no information. You get a name from a neighbour, a number from a directory, and a price on the back of a business card. There is no easy way to know whether the licence is current, whether the price is reasonable, or whether the person quoting has done this particular kind of work before.

Meanwhile good contractors have the opposite problem. They spend money on leads that go nowhere, compete against quotes that leave out half the work, and lose jobs to whoever guessed lowest. The homeowner who would have been glad to hire them never hears their name.

Project Express was built to fix both sides of that at once. A homeowner describes the work in plain language and gets a properly scoped project. Contractors who actually serve that area and that trade see it and quote on the same scope, so the prices can be compared honestly. Nobody pays for a lead, and nobody is chasing anyone.

Who is behind it

Project Express is a team of construction and project managers and engineers with experience spanning decades. That experience runs from multi-million-dollar commercial construction through to residential remodels and repairs, which matters more than it might sound.

The disciplines that keep a large project on schedule and on budget are not exotic. Define the scope before pricing it. Write down what is excluded, not only what is included. Agree the schedule and the milestones in advance. Put it in a contract both sides understand. Those habits are standard practice on a commercial job site and almost unheard of on a kitchen remodel, and the absence of them is why so many home improvement projects go wrong.

Our founder and chief executive holds degrees and advanced degrees in engineering, a Master of Business Administration, a degree in construction management, and a doctoral degree in administration. The company was incepted in 1999.

The premise of the company is simple: apply the project management discipline used on large construction projects to the kind of work people actually have done at home.

What we do for homeowners

You describe the problem the way you would describe it to a friend. Our AI turns that into a clear, properly scoped project: what the work involves, what a contractor should assess on site, and which questions to expect. You read it, change anything that is wrong, add photos or measurements, and only then decide whether to send it.

Contractors who serve your area and your trade receive the project and respond with structured quotes. Every quote has the same four parts: price, exclusions, message, and timeline. That last point does more work than it appears to. When three quotes all state what they exclude, you can see which one is genuinely cheaper and which one simply left something out.

Searching the directory is free and always will be. We ask for a name, ZIP code, phone number and a verified email address, and nothing else until you decide to engage a pro. Contractors are not told who looked at their listing. Nobody is contacted until you say so.

What we do for contractors

Listing is free. We do not sell leads, we do not charge per contact, and we do not auction the same homeowner to five companies. A paid membership is what lets you submit quotes, and the tiers differ only in how many quotes you can send each month.

What you get in return is a homeowner who has already described the job, already seen a scope, and is expecting to compare structured quotes. You are not cold calling, and you are not paying for the privilege of finding out the job was never real.

Reviews can only be left by homeowners who actually hired through the platform. That rule costs us volume and it is worth it. A rating nobody can buy or manufacture is the only kind worth showing.

How we make money

Contractor memberships. That is the whole model.

We do not take a percentage of your project. We do not mark up quotes. We do not charge homeowners anything, at any point, for any feature. We are not paid to rank one contractor above another for reasons unrelated to their work, and members are shown first only where we say so plainly.

We mention this because the business model determines the incentives. A platform paid per lead wants to sell your details as many times as possible. A platform taking a cut of the job wants the job to be expensive. Ours wants contractors to keep renewing, which only happens if homeowners keep hiring them and staying happy.

Where we operate

We are starting in California, where the Contractors State License Board maintains a public register of licensed contractors including licence status, classification and expiry. That register is what lets us show licence information on a listing rather than asking you to take a contractor's word for it.

The platform is bilingual in English and Spanish throughout, because a large share of California's construction workforce and a large share of its homeowners are more comfortable in Spanish. That is a practical decision, not a gesture.

What we will not do

  • We will not sell your contact details to anyone.
  • We will not let a contractor pay to change or remove a review.
  • We will not describe a contractor as licensed unless their licence is verifiably current.
  • We will not imply a licence is held where the law does not require one.
  • We will not charge homeowners for access, now or later.
  • We will not push you toward a decision. Nothing is sent until you say so.
